If you're already learning Japanese then the writing system would be easy since Japanese kanji=Mandarin characters, otherwise the writing system would be harder.
I think one of the nicest things about chinese is that you don't have to conjugate verbs, you just use the infinitive all the time. For example, in English it's "I am, you are" where as in chinese it's "wo shi, ni shi." So I think that makes it significantly easier than people think grammar-wise.
Anyway, this blog is so cool! I'm also blogging about trying to learn chinese (if you click on my name it'll take you straight to my blog), except I'm a beginner. a definite beginner.

I am thinking of going to Taiwan for a one week retreat at the BaoLin Monastery.
I would like to discover Taiwan's culture.
How hard is the Chinese language to learn?
Harder then learning Japanese?
