I am trying to plan (in the long term) a holiday with my family in a Chinese speaking country. I was originally looking a China but your info and pictures are making me think more about Taiwan. Have you been to China as well? I am trying to work out which would be most family friendly but still have interesting places to visit "off the beaten track".

I haven't been to China, so can't realy compair the two places. I did want to go to Hong Kong during the trip I just got back from, but should have started organising that a bit earlier. That will now have to wait until next time.

All I can say is that Taiwan is a modern country with all the amenities that go with that. And there are plenty of interesting places off the beaten track to visit like the gorges around Hualien, Tainan the oldest city in Taiwan, or Jade Mountain which at about 4km is the highest peak in east Asia.
