Running Chinese Software on an English version of Windows

Normally trying to run a piece of software that was designed to run on a Chinese version of windows on an English version of windows will result in most of the Chinese text and menus being displayed as gibberish. Most copies of windows wont allow you to change the System Locale either. And even if you can change the System Locale this requires a system reboot and can then cause problems with some English language software.

The answer is SBAppLocale. This is a very simple command line program that only needs to be used once on each program that you want to change the Locale. This is only for Windows XP and you must have the needed Chinese font installed on your computer.

If you want to use a program that is called say “TaiwanApp”. You need to first install the software then find the directory it was installed to and locate TaiwanApp.exe. Now download SBAppLocale and copy it into the TaiwanApp directory. Next open the windows command prompt and go to the same directory. Now type,
SBAppLocale 1028 TaiwanApp.exe

The number 1028 represents the Chinese (Taiwan) Locale. Other Chinese Locales are,
3076 Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.)
5124 Chinese (Macau S.A.R.)
2052 Chinese (PRC)
4100 Chinese (Singapore)

Reading Signs # 4

The shop in this picture is an optometrist and the sign out the front translates to “Treasure come eyeglasses” The last two characters are 眼鏡 yan3 jing4 or “eyeglasses” which should not to be confused with 眼睛 yan3 jing1 which means “eyes”. The first two characters are 寶 bao3 “treasure” and 來 lai2 “come”.

Dancers in Hualien

Here is the second part of the video I posted here back in March of the A-mei dancers in Hualien, Taiwan. I should point out that the audience is not that big because it was the very last performance of the night. The earlier performance was packed out.

不 怕, 不 怕 - Bu pa, bu pa

Here is a link to a Chinese song that I came across by accident called Bu pa, bu pa. The original song called "Dragostea Din Tei" was a Romanian song by the band O-Zone. There have been a lot of versions of the song released in many different languages since the original release in 2003.

In recent times a Thailand version of the song has spawned a lip-synching craze on YouTube and become known as the "Numa Numa" song.

Anyway it's a fun song and the language is not too difficult so I decided to do a translation. I did have some help cleaning up my original translation though. My Mandarin is not yet that good and so I was a bit too literal in a few places.
